There is a small but growing revenue share derived from products being used with Linux. Linux is like UNIX operating systems in that it provides a reliable, scalable platform with many of the desired features of UNIX, but in a truly open system. It is not necessary to purchase expensive "client-access" licenses to apply Linux. The capabilities of Linux continue to expand with thousands of developers collaborating via the Internet to develop new Linux features, including improving reliability and scalability, and adding new applications and tools. Disney Believes In Better Customer
Service Through Spam

Disney Believes In Better Customer
Service Through Spam
12/23/2003 06:55 PM
The folks over at Disney have pulled the old switcheroo trick where they suddenly decide, after the fact, to chang e their privacy policy for their online sites, which they say is necessary for better customer service. Specifically, they say that Disney customers increasingly want to be able to tie their offline and online activities together, but as current online privacy policies forbid them from sharing info between their own entities, certain info that would be useful to share between, say, Disney online and a Disney theme park cannot be shared. However, at the same time, they're also sneaking in changes to make it easier for their "selected partners" to spam you. Even better, according to some, the "opt out" options they give you have been turning up "Page Not Found" 404 errors.

Seagate Believes In Self, Ups Hard Disk
Warranties to Five Years

Seagate Believes In Self, Ups Hard Disk
Warranties to Five Years
07/27/2004 09:21 AM

logo_www_seagate.jpg imageUnless you consider hard drives to be disposable (not a bad policy, given current failure rates), you'll probably be interested in hearing that hard drive manufacturer Seagate has upped to warranty period for all of its consumer hard drives to five years. Over the last couple of years, most major hard disk manufacturers had quietly changed their warranty period to one year (most were at a three year warranty before that), in spite of (or because of) an increasingly poor record of drive life-cycles. It has since become almost a joke to presume that any hard drive will last longer than a couple of years without failure; an interesting proposition, considering that the average computer user still keeps all of their data on a single drive.

Of course, just because a drive has a five year warranty doesn't mean the drive will last that long. You should still back up like a good Computer Scout. But in the worst case, at least you'll be able to get a replacement drive while you're tearing up over years of lost pornography.
