People Want To Blame Anyone Else For Any
Illegal Activity They Do Online
06/14/2004 01:17 PMIt's already been well established in this "me first" society that no
one takes responsibilities for their own illegal actions. For
example, just a few weeks ago, we wrote about the student who was
suing
his university for kicking him out for plagiarizing. He admitted
he cheated, but felt it was the university's job to have caught him
earlier. This same logic seems to be catching on with any number of
folks who post information online. A new study shows that many people
feel that
they
should not be blamed if they put unlawful content online. While
you can make reasonable arguments (depending on the circumstances) why
they may not be liable, it's more interesting to look at who they do
think should take the blame. 30% said the ISP should take the blame
for
not stopping the user from posting the illegal content.
Another 15% blamed the government, who obviously has better things to
do than running the country and, instead, should be policing online
message boards to make sure no one posted false information. Finally,
in the ultimate desperation move, 11% say that the blame should fall
on those who accessed the content rather than themselves, the
posters of the content. That would be a fun court argument: "Yes,
your honor, I did post confidential corporate information publicly on
a Yahoo message board - but no harm would have been done if no one had
visited it! Thus, the blame, sadly, must fall on each and every
visitor who caused the company trouble by looking at that content."
Of course, with so many news articles claiming (incorrectly) that
people are being sued for downloading (and not uploading) music files,
perhaps we know where this line of thought comes from.

Are People Using Non-Browser Apps To
Access The Internet?
12/30/2003 04:06 PMNielsen/NetRatings is reporting that
more and
more people are accessing the internet via non-browser
applications. 76% of users connect via non-browser applications,
with the popular ones being instant messaging and the various media
players. I'm not sure why this is a big deal. Lots of people use
non-browser applications to reach the internet. This isn't a question
of replacing the browser, but other, non-browsing applications using
the internet as well, for other, (you guessed it) non-browsing
purposes. It really wasn't that long ago that
all internet
applications were non-browser applications. I'm actually surprised
that email applications aren't included at the top of this list. Are
that many people really using web-based email applications these days?
In the meantime, Jeremy Wagstaff is pointing out that
many of these applications are sneakily installed upon startup, so
that many users have them connecting to the internet when they don't
even know about it, making this study even less meaningful.

Shocker: People Realize That Internet
Affairs Are Damaging
04/19/2004 04:15 AMFor those who didn't yet figure it out, even an online "affair"
can damage a
relationship. That's what a new study says, though, I question
the methodology. They study was only conducted with students who may
have a fairly different definition of what constitutes a relationship
than those out of college and in the working world. Still, as the
study shows, even those who don't necessarily think of an online
affair as "cheating," most still realize that it would hurt their
partner to know about it. It seems pretty obvious that if something
you're doing would hurt your partner that it's probably not going to
do much good for the relationship.

Phone exec: "People don't want open
Internet access"
08/27/2004 01:46 PM
Cory Doctorow:
The COO of 3, a European 3G wireless company, has uttered one of the
stupidest things ever said by a phone company executive
(
there's a field with some stiff competition!). In justifying
his company's decision to censor the Internet services delivered over
its wireless link (they're only allowing customers to access certain,
selected services, rather than providing a fast wireless pipe that
customers can use as they see fit), this loonytune has this to say:
'People don't want open access, that's not what our
customers tell us they want,' he said. 'Anyone in their right mind who
tries to do anything on the Internet with a screen that size has to be
nuts.'
