White House Irked as Powell Airs Iraq
Misgivings
04/18/2004 10:46 PMThe secretary of state's apparent decision to cooperate on a new book
on the Iraq war has aggravated tensions in the Bush cabinet.
Powell's Books Has Wi-Fi
Powell's Books Has Wi-Fi
04/22/2004 10:32 AMPersonal Telco places latest free Wi-Fi node in World Cup Coffee
inside Powell's City of Books store in Portland, Oregon: Powell's City
of Books is, in fact, an entire city block, and the largest single
bookstore in the world. They have outrigger stores nearby, including a
vast technical bookstore. World Cup Coffee has been a big supporter of
Personal Telco's efforts, as well. Nigel Ballard of Personal Telco
notes that This node goes live with experimental support for SIP-based
VoIP (Voice Over IP) wireless phones such the Pulver WisIP and the
Zyxel Prestige 2000W. Powell's pioneered the unique art of shelving
new and used books side by side, and first sold books over the
Internet using telnet in 1994, predating Amazon.com....
Michael Powell's farewell
Michael Powell's farewell
03/14/2005 06:11 PMAnyone cynical about government, the FCC, bureaucrats, or outgoing
FCC Chairman Michael Powell should go watch Powell's
sign-off at the end of today's FCC Meeting. (Powell's remarks start
at 1:14 into the broadcast, and run about 3 minutes.)
Yes, he's on the verge of tears. No, it's not an act.
Michael Powell's Contradicting Claims
Michael Powell's Contradicting Claims
07/14/2004 03:43 AMWe've talked in the past about the
need to
totally rethink spectrum allocation policy at the FCC, or possibly
to
rethink
the FCC itself. So, it's good to see FCC chairman Michael Powell
state that
"Right now, we're in a
terrible position where a company's regulatory treatment is more a
matter of from whence they came rather than what they're really doing
now." By saying this, he's suggesting he recognizes that
squeezing new technologies into old regulations is a recipe for
disaster. Unfortunately, his statements before he got to tech policy
completely contradict this. He talks about the need to bring
indecency laws that now cover broadcast TV to make sure they cover
cable TV as well. Leaving aside the question of why an agency whose
mission is to focus on spectrum allocation should be involved in any
sort of question on indecency, isn't this exactly what he said he
didn't want to do with technology policy? He's trying to squeeze new
technology (cable TV) into old regulations (indecency regulations for
over-the-air broadcast TV).
Bush's Iraq Lies, Powell's Disgrace
Bush's Iraq Lies, Powell's Disgrace
04/19/2004 05:49 PMSo, the White House pretty much
admits everything but some small details in Bob Woodward's
book. As USA Today quotes Bush's press secretary,
"This is a pretty
detailed look at the complex process that was underway to bring the
issue of Saddam Hussein before the world community and ultimately
remove him from power."

Iraq (Los Angeles Times)
07/15/2004 05:31 AM
Los Angeles Times - WASHINGTON — Days before Secretary of State
Colin L. Powell was to present the case for war with Iraq to the
United Nations, State Department analysts found dozens of factual
problems in drafts of his speech, according to new documents contained
in the Senate report on intelligence failures released last week.

C-Span Airing Internet Panel
C-Span Airing Internet Panel
09/04/2004 03:17 PMAt last week's Progress & Freedom Foundation Aspen meeting I did a
panel with James Taranto, who writes the Wall Street Journal's
OpinionJournal.com "Best of the
Web" blog. The topic was how political operatives are using the
Internet, and how regular folks can do the same in their political
activities. As I said in the book, I don't agree with him politically,
for the most part, but he does write with real style (and is a
thoughtful, nice guy in person).
I don't think there's a file of our talk on the Web, but here's
the
schedule on the C-Span site. Let me know if you see it archived
anywhere and I'll point to it. Thanks.

04/30/2004 12:07 PMThe Sinclair Broadcast Group has joined the broadcasting Hall of
Cowardice with its craven decision to prevent its customers from
seeing tonight's Nightline broadcast, on which anchor Ted
Koppel will read the names and show pictures of the American service
men and women killed in the current Iraq War.
On Sinclair's home page today is a
statement about the company's reason for this move: a claim that the
Nightline show is a purely political act. Let's assume for a minute
that this is true, and that -- as the statement implies -- the motive
is to cast a bad light on the war -- even though Sinclair's statement
doesn't begin to make such a case. Does this mean Sinclair will start
blacking out the flagrantly pro-administration Fox News programming?
You will not be even slightly surprised to know that the various
Smiths who run this company are HUGE donors to George W. Bush and the
Republican Party, according to the always-valuable Open Secrets database of
political influence-peddling. See this and this, in
particular.

JibJab Bush/Kerry spoof?
07/28/2004 03:00 PMErnest Miller says,
BoingBoing
noted yesterday that JibJab, the creators of the hilarious Bush/Kerry/Guthrie parody were
facing threat of a copyright lawsuit by the current copyright holders
for "This Land is Your Land." Now, the Home Recording Rights Coalition has
issued a press release pointing out that when the television news
broadcasts promoted the flash animation they were likely "inducing"
people to violate copyright, assuming that the animation isn't fair
use. Under the INDUCE Act, that could make the broadcasters liable for
literally millions of copyright violations. Heh.

Biometric Mod Cabinet

The Mod Cabinet
from glide is a smallish cabinet with a built-in biometric fingerprint
sensor that allows you to lock down access to only those pre-approved.
Even better (or worse, from a security standpoint) there is a
Bluetooth wireless link for configuring the Mod Cabinet from across
the room using the customer PC or Pocket PC software. You can also
purchase the cabinet without locks or biometric sensor, but what's the
fun in that?
