NEC to translate my bl0g

NEC to translate my bl0g 04/06/2005 07:04 AM

My blog uses a "by/2.0" Creative Commons license. This means that anyone can use anything from my blog and copy or create derivative works without asking permission as long as they give me attribution. NEC has gotten into blogging and wanted to use the content from my blog. Unfortunately, I write mostly in English. I have tried translating posts myself as well as using a number of volunteer translators. The problem is, translation is not very fun and I would rather write another post in English than spend time translating. The combination of NEC's desire to use my content and my Creative Commons license allows NEC to pay a translator to translate my blog into Japanese and use the content on their blog. I don't get paid, but now my words are available in Japanese too.

NEC tells me that after a six month period, they will release the Japanese content under and Creative Commons by-nc-sa/1 .0/jp license which will allow me to copy the the translations back to my blog after this period.

Translations are essential for building bridges between cultures. One big problem is that translation sometimes cost MORE than the cost of writing the original work. It's also more boring. Using CC to allow people to create business models to pay translators seems like a great idea to me. Thanks NEC!

As I hope you know, Creative Commons launched the iCommons project to internationalize our licenses. Japan was the first to launch. There will be many more launching through the year. As part of the process, we've opened up our Flash for others to make derivative works. We're very eager to find people to port the Flash elsewhere. Check it out h ere.

When I heard about the XHTML Friends Network, I kind of filed it away with FOAF and other technology projects that sound interesting but entirely too academic, since they often offer no immediate means to incorporate them into my sites/tools. When I noticed that XFN was a blogroll thing and that I recently started using some code to extract my blo.gs favorites into a blogroll here on this site, I asked Jim if it was possible to incorporate xfn into the blo.gs tool.

He launched it today and here's a screenshot of the interface for one of my favorites. It's dead simple, letting you click a few boxes and push a button to fill out your relationship info and eventually the info will percolate into my blogroll here on my site.

A lot of new technologies focus so much on the nitty gritty details of RDF, XML, etc and I think developers forget that people won't or can't use any technology until it's got an easy-to-use interface. I know it's important at some level, but I couldn't care less about say, which RDF vocabulary FOAF will use, I only care how easy it will be to add FOAF stuff to my site (best is having something do it automatically) and what cool apps people can build off it.

Y! Japan Day #1 is Over

Y! Japan Day #1 is Over 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
The first day of stuff at Y! Japan is over. We ended the day with a nice welcome reception/party that just ended a bit ago. And I had a few Japanese beers, which is always a good thing. The day went well. The network flaked out once, but it was fixed pretty quickly. I'm getting a chance to meet people that I've only known by name (if at all) from various other offices, including Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and even...

Y! Japan Day #2

Y! Japan Day #2 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
Day #2 went well. I did my ~1.5 hours of MySQL presentations in the afternoon. (Rasmus did PHP in the morning.) Initial feedback is good except for the fact that I spoke too quickly during the first talk. Luckily someone reminded me to slow down for the second one. In the evening, we headed downstairs to celebrate the Y! Japan earnings announcement (they kicked some ass). All the non-Japan folks got to stand up on stage to get recognized. However,...

Lots of good talks today. From the point of view of a US engineer, it was an especially interesting day. Why? Because most of the day was taken up by representatives from each of the non-US properties talking about what they've been up to, problems they're having, and so on. We got to hear from: Australia China Europe Hong Kong Japan Korea Latin America Singapore Taiwan (Kimo) After the formal presentations were over, a group of us headed out...

Beer in Japan

Beer in Japan 03/14/2005 05:02 PM
Some of the little things about visiting Japan amuse me the most. As an example, while browsing a store on Sunday we came across Diet Beer: And the fact that Budwiser is an import in Japan, and therefore more desirable by some, takes a bit of getting used to as well. All in all, I had a good trip. I'll surely have more to say about it in the next few days....

Photoblox in Japan

Photoblox in Japan 05/25/2004 04:25 PM

Apparently a bunch of Japanese bloggers have discovered Laszlo's Photoblox's photo album component and embedded it into their blogs!  The Google results comes back with 1,500 hits.

I'm not that surprised that this has happened, as much as wondering "how did this happen?"

Via my blog?  Joi?  I don;t believe Joi even knows or notices anything about Laszlo, so i gotta wonder "hoe the hell did they find out about Photoblox?"

If anyone knows (Adriaan?) - let me know!  Thanks

UPDATE:  This just in from Lyndon Wong, Photoblox Product Manager....

Hey Marc,

There's seriously something going on with PhotoBlox in Japan. Numerous blogs with embedded, customized photobloxes. A google search indicates there are more photoblox users in Japan than in the rest of the world combined.

First 24 hours in Japan

First 24 hours in Japan 08/09/2004 07:37 AM

My first 24 hours in Japan included the following:

  • a soak in a traditional Japanese public bath
  • a swim in a 25-yard pool
  • a visit to an enormous Buddhist temple complex that has been an important pilgrimage site for hundreds of years
  • a semi-traditional tea ceremony
  • walking around three koi ponds
  • a meal in a restaurant that has been in the same family and at the same location for more than 300 years

All this without leaving Narita, the town in which Tokyo's international airport is located!

What's up between Japan and Korea

What's up between Japan and Korea 04/06/2005 03:22 PM

History Lesson: Heart of the matter by Hayami Ichikawa and others at Asahi Shimbun in Japan pinpoints the real issue behind the ongoing conflict between Japan and Korea over Dokdo (Takeshima) islets: Koizumi and his cabinet are clueless.

Hayami understands why Koreans are so upset over Dokdo and explains it well:

To the South Koreans, Takeshima, a group of islets called Tokto in Korean, represents a symbol of Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the Korean Peninsula.

The incorporation of the Sea of Japan isles into Shimane Prefecture on Feb. 22, 1905, is viewed as a prelude to what Japan was later to inflict upon the peninsula.

It's now 2005 and it seems to be happening all over again.

Japanese government's history whitewashing service covers US too because mentions of the fact that no WMD has been found in Iraq were removed from school textbook drafts at the request of Japanese government officials.

Pretty funny?  Well, not if you consider that Japan is trying to buy a seat in the UN Security Council.  Brrrrr!

Battlestar Japan

Battlestar Japan 05/23/2004 06:20 AM
You just gotta love a country where they show live, professional go games on TV... With commentary! :-)
Well, another three hour ordeal, and this wasn't actually such a bad experience (as the aforementioned Troy).

I'm talking about the pilot of the new edition of Battlestar Galactica, which I had the opportunity of catching on the flight. I remember watching the original series when I was really young - we had to get a new TV to watch it. Our old Philips did not have an UHF receiver, and BG was on TV2 - so we got a new Goldstar black-and-white set. Oh, the memories.

But this new version is actually not half bad. OK, so Starbuck and Boomer are women (and there's some electricity between Starback and Apollo already), though I liked the character of Cassiopeia from the original series more. But it's perhaps the sign of the times. No real complaints. The effects were wonderful, and having actually silent space travel and semi-newtonian physics felt good for a change. The space combats were staged well, though I still long for the old-style Cylon fighters. They were the scariest things still seen on TV, these new ones just look like something stolen out of a computer game. I especially loved the "debris rain", and the fact that most of the characters were really rather intelligent. No glaring plot holes or gaping amounts of stupidity yet...

But yeah, I could see myself growing to like this. It's miles better than Galactica 1980, anyway... (Sheesh, flying motorcycles?)

(Yah, I'm in Tokyo now, and managed to catch a flu as well. Bugger.)
